The Intern Program at Kiss the Cow Farm
2022 Interns Wanted: Must Love Cows, Veggies & Ice Cream!
Intern positions at Kiss the Cow Farm provide the opportunity to experience first-hand what it takes to manage a diverse, organic farm. Apprenticeships are not easy as the hours are long and the work is physical. However, there is no better way to learn the craft of small-scale agriculture than to roll up your sleeves and do it. The primary goal of our intern program is to teach you what you need to know and give you plenty of practice and the confidence to pursue your own farm dream.
Job Description: Our interns focus on five areas, dairy herd management, pastured poultry management, growing organic vegetables, ice cream making and sales/distribution. You will, however, be involved in ALL aspects of managing a small, grass-based farm, including: milking, feeding, moving animals to new pastures, fencing, calf care, herd health and nutrition, safety, dairy protocols and processes. You will participate in many aspects of vegetable food production including planting, hoeing, weeding, and mulching. Plus harvesting, washing, and packing produce. You’ll be raising poultry from day-old chicks, feeding, watering, moving; collecting, cleaning and packaging eggs. You will make, scoop and eat lots of ice cream. You will participate at farmers markets and, putting up and delivering CSA boxes, restocking the farm store, cleaning, repairs, maintenance, and construction projects.
We expect honest, conscientious work. It's not about working fast or getting everything done. It's actually about you. Days are filled with chores, projects, customers, time in the garden or creamery and laughter! The workdays may be long or in shifts. However, we take plenty of breaks –chatting, reading, and catching some vitamin D sunrays on top of the haybales, taking the calves for walks, etc. Our standards are high and necessarily so as we are entrusting you to prepare dairy and poultry products for safe human consumption. Please consider this commitment before applying. However, we find the work is enjoyable and the animals provide lots of entertainment.
This is really your experience, not ours. While working closely with us some of the time, you will also have independent responsibilities. So let us know what you want to learn, what you want to be able to competently do when you move on. We’ll try to incorporate your goals into the experience you have with us.
Qualifications: You need to have a positive-can-do attitude, be self-motivated, hard-working, inquisitive, and a good communicator. If you have the courage to try things and you smile at bad jokes in spite of yourself, then you’ll probably fit in. This is a learning experience: you need to want to learn. You will need to be reasonably fit and able to lift 50lbs regularly. You should also be able to work outside in all weather conditions from rain to mid-summer heat. Please no smoking, drug use, excessive alcohol consumption, or pets. A valid driver’s license is required.
We ask that you have some experience farming and working with animals. You must take direction and feedback, be able to work on your own and with minimal direction once you’ve been taught how to do a task. We don’t expect you to know everything or be perfect. We do expect you to be willing to learn and to work honestly and conscientiously.
Compensation: Basically you become a member of the farmily! There are bedrooms upstairs in the farm house. Or you could choose to live in your tent anywhere on the surrounding several hundred acres of woodland and eat what you can forage, but, hey, it’s your choice! We’ve also retrofitted the sugar house into a 1-2 person residence. Laundry, shower, and kitchen (with basic ingredients plus veggies & dairy plus grocery allowance) are available at the main house and there is also an outside shower. Meals can be with us or on your own. While not vegetarians ourselves, we love veggies and there are plenty in the summer and fall! The fire pit is a great place for the crew to be on their own and hang out together if you want.
Interns receive a weekly stipend based on experience and performance. And of course, you’ll leave with tons of experience and the confidence to follow your own farm dreams.
Apply today! If you’ve read this far and it still seems exciting, then please send a letter of interest and references to [email protected]. We thank you for your interest, and will be in touch with you shortly regarding a telephone interview if we think we’re a good match. NOTE: We're only taking 2-3 motivated folks this year.
